We all know some etiquette. Have you heard any online etiquette? Some people cannot grasp some of the most basic etiquettes when it comes to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and the other platforms.

Doing businesses need to pay attention to what they send out on social media.

Unfortunately, there is no standard guideline for “how to behave on social media”. The list of online etiquettes can be very long.

However, I am going to outline 5 most important unspoken rules of social media marketing.

Keep your opinions to yourself. When you use social media for your business, you should not discuss any controversial subjects and mention any “hot topics”, such as politics, gender, race, or region issues.

Respond to customers ASAP. When I work for my clients, I have to be ready 24/7. I have to expect to reply them asap. Social media platforms are channels of communications between customers and businesses. Keep things positive, informative, and professional.

Proofread before sending the message out. It is important to read your message before you click “tweet”, “post”, or “send”. Spelling and grammar are important. Also, make sure the hashtags is correct. For example, #Susanalbumparty is not the same as #SusanAlbumParty, and it can cause PR disasters.

Having a good relationship with the community. Indeed, you need to have a good customer service. You also need to be social and share other business’s content (not your competitors). A good business is to support other businesses.

Different platforms have different rules. Each social media platforms has different “rules”. You use different social media platforms to connect people in different ways. LinkedIn is for professional networking. Instagram is a platform to connect people with images or videos. Medium is to connect writers or politicians. You should maximise the contents by using different social media platforms.

Social Media Marketing is not easy, especially when you don’t know the online etiquette. In my previous post, “5 Social Media Marketing Practices that needs to be stopped“, I mentioned that you should not add your LinkedIn contacts to your Email List. In my option, I consider that is spammy, and it is quite rude. However, there are five more practices on LinkedIn you should not do.

First, we should not think LinkedIn is Facebook. Posting cat videos, Kermit evil memes, or your drunk pictures is definitely not professional. You might post memes content sometimes but it should be related to your work.

Second, you should keep your profile picture professional. Your profile picture is the first impression. If you put a selfie taken in your bathroom or hotel toilet, that cannot be professional. Also, putting snapchat filters on your picture is not professional as well. I also have seen lots of profile pictures of partying or travelling etc. You can keep these pictures at your photo album in your cell phone, but not online. You don’t need to hire a professional portrait photographer to make a decent headshot.

Third, spamming to everyone on LinkedIn. LinkedIn is for networking. If you heavily promote your service or products on LinkedIn, that can be very annoying. The most notable case would be making a new connection. Don’t send the second message regarding your promotion to someone who you have just connected. That is way too hard selling. Be personal and craft your message. It takes times to convict someone to use your product or service. LinkedIn is a social media platform, so please be more social.

Fourth, don’t pick a fight. I speak the truth often. But when I go online, I would be careful. Other people might not agree with you online when you are too upfront. The conversation can turn out to be a fight. When someone else sees all these negative comments on LinkedIn, your reputation would not be good.

Fifth, LinkedIn does not like hashtag, yet. Hashtag works well on Instagram so far but not yet LinkedIn. LinkedIn may change the platform for hashtag friendly in the future. However, at this moment, be wise to use them.

5 Social Media Marketing Practices that needs to be stopped

I talked about some Social Media Marketing trending of 2017.

However,  social media marketers need to stop some practices that can annoy people.

In this article, I am going to outline 5 most annoying social media practices.

(1) Auto Direct Messages on Twitter

We know you are very polite and send a direct message to us. However, the chance for people to read the direct message (DM) on Twitter is very small. It is because there are too many auto DMs.

It is true that we can miss some read and genuine messages, but it becomes more difficult. Blame the automated, overly promoted spams and impersonal thank you messages. These messages do not have positive marketing effect for your brand. Instead, people may unfollow, mute, or even block you to contact them.

So what should you the marketers do instead? If you want to contact the person, you can go to their profile and look for their email contact, or send them a tweet.

(2) Adding LinkedIn contacts to your Email List

Seriously, this is annoying. I have received many spam emails about investment, gold mines, and even a sex toy discount offer. These emails are coming from my LinkedIn contacts while they have the opening “Thank you for connecting me on LinkedIn. This is a special offer for you!”

Some people think that using LinkedIn “contact” for email marketing is a way to generate more leads. However, it turns out it is a spamming practice. Adding people to an email list without permission is spamming them.

I live in Canada. The spam legislation is very strict, and I can report someone who spams me on LinkedIn. You will take a risk to get a penalty.

On the other hand, someone can upload their Linkedin contact email lists to Facebook Ads and create a Custom Audience. Facebook does not allow such practice. It is because the person has to give the permission to you for this purpose.

(3) Auto Comments on Instagram

Can you say something more than “Cool Pic”?

Don’t use third party tools for posting comments on Instagram. You must have seen these comments before: “Love it!” “Cool!” and so on.

In fact, there are some blackhat Instagram apps with auto comments function. These apps are considered as spamming on Instagram, and it is against Instagram’s guidelines.

Even if you do not use any these apps, don’t post a robot-like comment. ” People may consider you as a bot when you only comment “Great pic!” “nice”  So if you acting like a bot, please stop. Write something more personal in the comments.

(4) Adding People to Groups on Facebook without permission

This happened to me few times. It is a very bad social media practice. If you want your friend to join your group, please invite them or ask them politely. Adding people to your new group without permission is quite rude.

(5) Tag Tag Tag.. RECKLESSLY

Tagging function on social media platforms are very powerful and useful, but it can be very annoying. I have received people tagging on Instagram for promoting their new projects, new products, or special offers.

Most of the time I ignore these tags and I consider most of them are spams. I unfollowed and blocked some people who consistently tagged me.

If you want to use tagging function for marketing, you have to use it wisely. For example, tag someone in a relevant post and the person would be most likely interested in (do some research). Do not tag someone into political posts. That is a big no-no.
